Summer kicked off with a bang! Everyone talked about the rainy season, but it wasn't so bad. The heat, though – that was a different story. Luckily, I discovered a sweet local beach just 14km away – perfect for cycling adventures with friends. We loved that it was clean, uncrowded, and became our go-to spot for swimming and chilling. Tip: pack everything on your first trip so you know what essentials to bring!
Now, about the dorm... living with so many students from different cultures – mostly Nepal and Vietnam – had its challenges. Let's just say sharing two kitchens per floor got pretty messy, especially with the Nepalese guys who never cleaned up and their noisy pressure cooker rice routine at all hours! One night, it got to me, and I let them have it (no regrets).
But the worst was that one night around 1 am, an intense smell woke us up. Turns out a guy on our floor was cooking SQUID on an open fire in the hallway! I filmed it, and he got kicked out for being a hazard. Yikes.
Even with the chaos, the dorm holds good memories too. I cooked big meals for friends, and even though our rooms were tiny, we'd haul chairs into the kitchen and eat together. Randy and my room became the hangout spot – drinks, laughs, and crazy nights with up to six of us crammed inside. We studied occasionally, mostly watched anime or danced! Sure, the dorm's "no drinking" rule was ignored, and someone even made mead (it was surprisingly good!). Randy's birthday bash in Andy's room was epic – school paper confetti, drinking games, and a giant bottle of sake.
The dorm may have been cramped, had too many cockroaches, and a messy kitchen situation, but it's where we bonded. Most of us couldn't wait to get our own apartments... but that's a story for another blog post!
