Our first major festival in Japan was the legendary Hakata Dontaku during Golden Week, right after starting school. Fresh faces and new friends, we formed a group chat on LINE to plan our adventure. Most of my future explorations of Kyushu would be with this amazing people!
We aimed for the iconic Dontaku celebrations, but fate had a delightful detour in store. On the way, we stumbled upon a smaller, local festival that became the highlight of our experience. It was a true expression of community spirit, with people of all ages participating. We witnessed captivating dances, thunderous taiko drumming, and beautiful singing. The locals even invited us to join a friendly tug-of-war! Me and Andy versus Charlotte and Randy, with some friendly Japanese folks on each side – and our team emerged victorious (thanks, Andy!). With hearts full, we continued to the main event.
The Hakata Dontaku Festival exploded across the heart of Fukuoka. A major road became a massive festival ground, buzzing with infectious energy. People from around the globe – over a million in total – came to witness this spectacle. The stars of the show were the parades, stretching for over 6 hours each day. Vibrant floats, mesmerizing performances, and an electrifying atmosphere filled the streets.
Be prepared for a marathon! This is a standing festival, so comfortable shoes and a hat are essential. Golden Week weather can get hot, so stay hydrated with plenty of drinks and bring sunscreen. Don't be surprised if you receive gifts from the performers – it's all part of the festive spirit!
If you're lucky enough to be in Fukuoka during Golden Week, the Hakata Dontaku Festival is an absolute must. From the intimate charm of local celebrations to the sheer scale of this legendary event, it's a cultural immersion you'll never forget.
