Why did I move to Japan

Two years ago, I found myself working as a restaurant manager in the charming town of Mariazell. As winter set in, limiting outdoor activities, I decided to embark on the journey of learning Japanese, fueled by my love for anime and Japanese culture. Balancing my native Czech language and the daily use of German and English at work proved challenging, but I persevered, focusing on mastering the basics of Hiragana and Katakana during breaks.

Despite the initial hurdles, my dedication led me to tackle Kanji in the evenings after work. My commitment continued for several months, but as the world, including Japan, closed its doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, my dream of visiting Japan remained distant. During this time, I contemplated the idea of working in Japan as a teacher and even enrolled in a course for English teaching. However, the realization that I couldn't obtain a teaching position without a university degree led me to abandon that plan. Nevertheless, I persisted in my Japanese studies.

Fast forward to May of last year, when personal issues prompted me to consider leaving Mariazell for Vienna. The plan took a detour, and I entertained the idea of moving to Norway, enticed by its beauty and economic prospects. After facing challenges and disagreements, I returned to the Czech Republic, unsure of my next steps. At this point, I paused my Japanese studies, uncertain about my future location.

Despite unsuccessful attempts to secure a job in Norway, an opportunity emerged in Edinburgh through my former boss. I interviewed for a position as Head Waiter in a Michelin-starred restaurant. Unfortunately, the job didn't qualify for a work visa sponsorship, leaving me disheartened. Unsure of my path but eager for a change, I contemplated taking a trip.

One evening, as I sat at my computer, I discovered remarkably affordable flights to Japan. Inspired by the prospect of a three-week journey, I decided to seize the opportunity. Before departing, I learned about the possibility of studying Japanese in Japan at a more reasonable cost than expected. After completing my trip and returning home, I navigated the paperwork, applied to study in Fukuoka, and, after four months of anticipation, arrived in Japan at the end of March, just in time to witness the cherry blossoms in full bloom.

二年前、私は魅力的な町マリアツェルでレストランマネージャーとして働いていました。冬が到来し、屋外の活動が制限される中、アニメと日本の文化への愛から刺激を受け、日本語の学習の旅に乗り出すことを決意しました。母国語であるチェコ語と、仕事でのドイツ語と英語の日常的な使用を調和させることは挑戦でしたが、休憩中にひらがなとカタカナの基本をマスターすることに焦点を当て、忍耐強く取り組みました。

最初のハードルにもかかわらず、私の献身は仕事の後の夕方に漢字に取り組むことにつながりました。私のコミットメントは数か月にわたり続きましたが、世界全体がCOVID-19パンデミックの影響で閉ざされたため、日本への訪問の夢は遠ざかっていました。この時期に私は日本で教師として働くという考えをめぐらし、英語教育のためのコースにも参加しました。しかし、大学の学位なしには教職を得ることができないことを悟り、その計画を放棄することになりました。それでも私は日本語の学習を続けました。

昨年の5月に進むと、私をウィーンから離れて考えさせた個人的な問題が生じました。計画は変更され、ノルウェーへの移動を検討し、その美しさと経済的な見通しに誘われました。課題と意見の対立に直面した後、私は次のステップが不確かなままチェコ共和国に戻りました。この時点で私は日本語の勉強を中断し、将来の居場所について不確かなままでした。

ノルウェーで仕事を見つけることができず、かつての上司を通じてエジンバラでの機会が生まれました。私はミシュラン星つきレストランのヘッドウェイターのポジションの面接を受けました。残念ながら、その仕事は労働ビザのスポンサーシップの対象外であり、私は失望しました。自分の進むべき道が分からないまま、変化を望みつつ、旅行を考えました。

ある晩、パソコンの前に座っていると、驚くほど手頃な価格の日本行きの航空券を見つけました。三週間の旅の可能性に触発され、この機会を利用することに決めました。出発前に、日本での日本語の学習が予想以上に手ごろな価格であることを知りました。旅を終えて帰国した後、書類作業に取り組み、福岡での学習を申し込み、4か月の期待を込めて3月末に日本に到着し、満開の桜を見ることができました。
